Easy DIY Dollar Store Hat Makeover Tutorial: Add a Silk Ribbon and Chin Strap

Easy DIY Dollar Store Hat Makeover Tutorial: Add a Silk Ribbon and Chin Strap

With summer fast approaching, now is the time to start thinking about sun hats. I love wearing a sun hat,  but I find that they blow off easily in windy weather. You don’t want to have to chase your hat down the beach or into the street! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to take a simple dollar store hat, add a pretty silk ribbon around the brim, and add chin strap to hold it on, so it won’t blow away. This is a quick and easy DIY  dollar store hat makeover!

Materials used:

Awhile back, I bought some silk sari scraps, and I’ve posted previously about how to make silk headbands and how to make a silk infinity scarf. I still have a lot of silk sari scraps, so I decided to use them on this hat project.

This is what I started with. The black ribbon was hot glued on, and I just pulled it off. I used this ribbon to create my chin strap, and I added a prettier silk piece around the brim.

To create holes for the chin strap to go through, fold the hat in half. Mark the edges of the hat, where the top meets the brim on either side. You want the holes to be equidistant from each other.

Use the punch that came with your eyelet kit to punch holes at the spots you marked. I had trouble getting the punch to go all the way through the hat, so I used scissors to cut all the way through, after marking the spots. Attach the eyelets using the instructions that came with your eyelet kit.

Put the old ribbon around the back of the hat and through each of the holes. Your chin strap is done.

I used a silk sari scrap here, but you could also use a silk scarf or any other pretty ribbon that you have. I folded my silk in half lengthwise, right sides together,  and sewed it into a tube. Turn your tube right side out. Now you don’t have any raw edges. Wrap the tube around the brim of your hat and tie it in the back. At the very back of my hat, I hand-tacked the knot from the silk ribbon to the body of the hat. Silk is a little slippery, so the ribbon might have come off otherwise. You could also hot glue it to the hat.
