Review of Lorraine Fabrics: Worth the Trip if You're in New England

In this post, I'll review the discount fabric warehouse Lorraine Fabrics in Pawtucket, RI. As you might have guessed from my post on Finding Cheap Fabric, I love a good bargain. At Lorraine Fabrics, you're sure to find something unique and budget-friendly. In terms of quality and price, Lorraine Fabrics is probably my favorite fabric store, and I'm sad that it's slightly too far away for me to go to it all the time.

Review:

Lorraine Fabrics is a bright and spacious warehouse with two floors worth of amazing fabric and notions. Downstairs, the front of the store has a variety of apparel fabric. I'll admit that I didn't spend a lot of time here because I'd heard about the bargain loft, and I was drawn toward the stairs at the back of the store.

I'll have to check this out more thoroughly next time!

Heading toward the back of the store, I had to stop in their upholstery and home decor section. It was massive, and had some gorgeous fabric. At the time, it was all on sale for $4.99 a yard, though this was a special winter clearance sale. My local stores can't touch the quality and price I found here. I wish Lorraine had an online store I could buy from! Their Facebook page links to a webpage, but it looks like the domain is for sale.

Another view of the upholstery section. There were 3-4 rows of this same size!

The second floor is nearly as spacious as the first, and all of the fabric is $2.99/yard. This was where I spent the bulk of my time, but I didn't take that many pictures because I was completely engrossed in the fabric selection. This photo shows about a quarter of the whole bargain loft section. The bolts in the foreground are not terribly exciting, I know, but overall, there was a great selection of quilting cotton, apparel fabric, and home decor fabric. I completely filled a shopping cart. Again, even the bargain items were higher quality (and certainly better priced) than I've found at local shops.

Downstairs again, I discovered a bin with scrap leather for $10 a pound. The pieces were good quality upholstery leather, and I got some big pieces, too. I've been wanting to get into leather crafting, and I'd had trouble finding reasonably priced leather online. This was by far the best size, quality, and price I've found for leather. Stay tuned for leather-working projects. I have several posts in the works!

What I Bought:

This was the final fabric haul. You'll see them in upcoming projects!

And this was the leather haul. Some of these pieces are 30-40" long and 20-30" wide. A few pieces were essentially half hides or more, and I'll be able to do some larger projects with these.

The only downside: they staple tags to the fabric, which I'm not crazy about.

Overall, though, it's an excellent fabric shop, and I plan to get back as soon as I can! If you're in the area, I definitely recommend checking it out.
