I post sewing and crafting tutorials here at the Mermaid’s Den. I love making things and sharing them with you, so you can make them, too.

Five Free Patterns: Make These Tote Bags!

Who doesn't need another tote bag? This post will cover five different sewing patterns for tote bags. Two of the patterns were created by me, while the other three have been tested out by me, and I highly recommend them. All of the sewing patterns are free and include step-by-step tutorials. With the holidays coming up, these would make great gifts, too!

Tote Bag Patterns

1. Jelly Roll Tote Bag by the Mermaid's Den

I made this spacious and sturdy tote for my trip to Brimfield, the largest outdoor antique show in the US. It held up well and was comfortable to carry all day. It takes a little time to put together, but it's worth it. It's made from one jelly roll and a lot of bias tape!

2. Batik Charm Square Tote Bag by the Mermaid's Den

Again, this tote made up of precut charm squares takes a little time to put together, but it's a lovely bag with a good amount of storage space.

3. Reusable market tote bag by So Sew Easy

I've made this tote bag a few times. It comes together pretty quickly, it looks nice, and the vinyl bottom makes it very durable. The tutorial includes fancier handles, but you can also use cotton webbing, like I did, to make the handles quick and easy. You need about half a yard of your main fabric and of your vinyl fabric.

4. 3-Fabric, 10-Step Tote by the Inspired Wren

I've made this bag a couple of times. I love the way the lining shows up on the outside of the bag to add a pop of color. The pattern is fairly simple, but it looks like it involves some work. You'll need three fabrics (1/4-1/2 yard each) and interfacing.

5. Easy Tote Bag by Needle and Spatula

This tote comes together quickly and easily. I made a bunch to use as gift bags last year for Christmas. It's an easy beginner project, and it's fun to make. Depending on the size of the tote you make, you'll need about 1/4-1/2 yard of fabric.
